Cheryl Craig is an American Educational Research Association (AERA) Fellow, which is the most prestigious research honor in the field of education—
AERA Fellow is a distinguished title afforded 2% of AERA’s 25,000 member-researchers. The work that earned Cheryl Craig this 2011 award were three consecutive articles published in the American Educational Research Journal (Craig, 2006, 2009a, 2009b), AERA’s flagship publication, along with her academic leadership of six urban schools during the $60 million Houston Annenberg Challenge. To have one article published in AERJ is a dream. Cheryl Craig has had three such publications, two in the same year, the latter being an AERA record.

Cheryl Craig’s second AERA award came in 2012 after she had received her AERA fellowship. The Outstanding Lifetime Career Award has been in place for nearly 50 years with one scholar annually receiving the honor. Less than 1% of AERA’s 25,000 members receive this distinction. The evidence that earned Cheryl Craig the award was a chapter published in the Sage Handbook of Curriculum and Instruction (Craig & Ross, 2008) in addition to her accumulated research record that places her in the top 2% in her field according to the Scopus search engine. Dr. Craig is also the leading narrative inquiry researcher in the U.S. Additionally, the AERA Outstanding Article Award that Dr. Craig received for her story constellations methodology paper (Craig, 2009) published in Teaching and Teacher Education (TATE), the top international teacher education journal in the field, was integral to her receiving the Division B honor.
Cheryl Craig received AERA’s Michael Huberman Award for Outstanding Contributions to Understanding the Lives of Teachers—
Cheryl Craig’s third AERA award, the Michael Huberman Award, which is given biennially, was bestowed on her in 2015. Dr. Craig is the only American who has ever received this prize. She is also the second female in the award’s history to be honored. The Outstanding Article Award she received from the International Study Association on Teachers and Teaching (ISATT) for her paper “learning to teach in the eye of a storm,” published in Teaching and Teacher Education (Craig, 2013), which was selected by reviewers from six continents, contributed to her receipt of this honor that is awarded to less than 1% of AERA’s 25,000 member-researchers. Cheryl J. Craig is the only scholar among AERA’s 25,000 members who has received all three of the aforementioned prizes.
Cheryl Craig received ISATT’s prestigious ST2AR Award for “significant and exemplary contributions through research, teaching and professional service in the international field of teaching and teacher education”—
Dr. Craig was the first American to receive ISATT’s top honor in 2019 for her work as ISATT Secretary (2008-2013), her executive editorship of the field’s two leading journals (Teaching and Teacher Education [TATE]; Teachers and Teaching: Theory and Practice [TTTP]) and her editing of ISATT’s yearbook (Craig, Meijer & Broeckmans, 2011) on the occasion of the organization’s 35th anniversary. Her many chapters in research handbooks (Craig, 2017, 2018b, 2018c, 2019) further contributed to this honor.

Craig’s co-authored article on “embodied knowledge” was chosen due to its innovative nature, its multi-racial/international research team and its interdisciplinary content. One award is granted annually with all AERA members being eligible. TATE featured the article on its homepage and granted it open access.
Cheryl Craig was elected Chair of the International Association on Teachers and Teaching (ISATT)—
Formerly a European organization, ISATT now serves members from 55 countries. In 2019, Dr. Craig was elected Chair, becoming the first American to assume this international leadership post. She defeated a Dean from Oxford University (UK) and a leading scholar from the University of Limerick (Irelan).
